The Noble Quran: English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujādilah Ayat (20–22)

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujādilah

Victory Will Be for the Believers

“Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—they are among the lowest.” [Q 58:20]

“Allah has decreed: 'I shall surely prevail, I and My Messengers.” Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.” [Q 58:21]

“You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan. Such are the ones in whose hearts Allah has established faith, and He has strengthened them with a spirit from Himself. He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Truly, the party of Allah shall be the successful.” [Q58:22]

Relationship with the Preceding Section

The preceding section refers to the wickedness of the hypocrites and states that they will suffer severe punishment on the Day of Judgment. This part explains that the hypocrites deserve such painful torment because they oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad. It also affirms that Allah—Exalted be He—has decreed that He will grant victory to His Messengers over their enemies. Furthermore, it emphasizes that belief in the Oneness of Allah and love for the enemies of Islam can never coexist in the heart of a true believer. This is because one who truly loves someone cannot also love the enemy of that beloved.

“Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—they are among the lowest.” [Q 58:20]

Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad and fight against Islam will be among the lowest. This is because victory will inevitably belong to Messenger Muhammad and his followers, even if its realization is delayed.

“Allah has decreed: 'I shall surely prevail, I and My Messengers.” Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.” [Q 58:21]

In this ayah, Allah—Exalted be He—gives glad tidings to the believers. He has decreed in the Preserved Tablet that He and His Messengers will ultimately prevail over their enemies. However, this victory will occur at the appointed time determined by His wisdom.

Allah granted victory to His Messengers and the believers in the past—such as Noah, Salih, Moses, and Muhammad (peace be upon them)—and He will continue to grant victory to the believers in the future by His will and bounty.

Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.

Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty. He is fully capable of defeating all who oppose Him and His Messenger Muhammad, and no one can prevail over Him—Exalted be He.

This ayah describes the qualities of the true believers.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, you will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, regardless of who they may be.

The intended meaning is a strong exhortation and emphasis on refraining from loving the enemies of Islam.

Even if they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan.

True believers do not love or befriend the enemies of Islam, even if those enemies are their fathers, who gave them life; their sons, who are extensions of themselves; their brothers, with whom they share blood relations; or their clan, to whom they belong by lineage and social connection.

The ayah mentions the fathers first, as they are typically those whom one is most obligated to obey. It then mentions the sons, who are often the most beloved. Next come the brothers, who are traditionally considered one's close supporters, and finally the clan, which represents one’s broader community and greatest worldly support after immediate family.

Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“[You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger…] This ayah was revealed regarding AbuʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarraḥ, who killed his father at the Battle of Uhud; ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭab, who killed his uncle al-ʿAṣ ibn Hisham at the Battle of Badr; and Abu Bakr, who called his son to a duel at the Battle of Badr. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him, ‘We want you to remain alive.’ It was also revealed about Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr, who killed his brother ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, and about ʿAli ibn Abī Ṭalib and ʿUbaydah, who killed ʿUtbah, Shaybah, and al-Walid ibn ʿUtbah at the Battle of Badr. Allah, Exalted be He, praises these noble companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for not preferring familial ties over loyalty to Allah and His religion. ”

Such are the ones in whose hearts Allah has established faith, and He has strengthened them with a spirit from Himself.

Those who do not love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are the ones in whose hearts Allah has firmly rooted true faith. Their hearts love only those who love the religion of Allah and reject those who oppose it. Allah has further strengthened their hearts with a spirit from Himself, enabling them to be firm against the enemies of Islam and compassionate toward the believers.

He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.

By His grace, Allah will admit these true believers—who never love those who oppose Him and His Messenger—into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell eternally, enjoying lasting felicity. Allah is pleased with them for their sincerity and righteous deeds, and they are pleased with Him because of His immense reward and mercy.

Those are the party of Allah. Truly, the party of Allah shall be the successful.

Those who do not love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are the true party of Allah. Surely, the party of Allah are the ones who will attain ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.

Key Lessons from Surah al-Mujādilah, Ayat 20–22

Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad shall be among the lowest and most humiliated.

Allah—Exalted be He—has decreed and recorded in the Preserved Tablet that He and His Messengers shall prevail over their enemies.

True belief in the Oneness of Allah and love for the enemies of Allah and His Messenger cannot coexist in a single heart. Those who love Allah and His Messenger do not love their enemies.

Allah—Exalted be He—has firmly established faith in the hearts of true believers who do not love the enemies of Allah and His Messenger. He strengthens them with a spirit from Himself.

These true believers will be admitted into Gardens beneath which rivers flow on the Day of Judgment. Allah will be pleased with them, and they will be pleased with Him.
